On July 13th, the Dr. James Still Center in Medford, NJ, will host a day where history comes alive through reenactment performances, nature trails, live music, food vendors, and more. This event celebrates the legacy of Dr. James Still, known as the "Black Doctor of the Pines." Born in 1812 to Levin and Charity Still, Dr. Still achieved remarkable success with little formal education, becoming a respected doctor and one of the wealthiest men in Burlington County, NJ. His brother, William Still, is renowned as the "father of the Underground Railroad."
Visitors can look forward to reenactments of both Dr. James Still and William Still, bringing their stories and contributions to life. Additionally, one of the highlights will be a performance by Millicent Sparks, a renowned Harriet Tubman reenactor. Sparks, who captivates audiences with her powerful portrayal, frequently visits schools and engages students from the 4th grade and up.
The Dr. James Still Center is New Jersey's only national park dedicated to celebrating an African American. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering a perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in history, enjoy nature, and experience live entertainment. Don't miss this unique celebration of African American heritage and the inspiring stories of perseverance and triumph.
